When we think of chemicals used in your pool, the one that immediately comes to mind is chlorine. However when it comes to pool cleaning and maintenance, our team of techs have a few other additives that we use to keep your pool swim ready. One of those is cyanuric acid.

A good way to think about cyanuric acid, is as a sunscreen for your pool. In other words, cyanuric acid is a chlorine stabilizer and a pool conditioner. Cyanuric acid will allow chlorine to last longer in the pool because it protects the chlorine from being degraded by the sun.

Chlorine is broken down when exposed to sunlight. We are not even talking days, the chlorine can start to degrade within hours! Our tech team starts to add cyanuric acid to the pool especially when the weather warms up. This reduces the impact of the sun on chlorine loss. It allows us to add less chlorine into the pool to replace what was lost. Cyanuric acid allows chlorine to do its job longer, which is to sanitize the water and kill any damaging bacteria. With the addition of cyanuric acid, your chlorine will last up to 3-5 times longer!

Pool cleaning and maintenance is a delicate balancing act! Luckily, our pool techs are well-trained in this process. Have questions? Give us a call, we are always happy to chat!

Until next time and happy swimming!
